Fire pit or outdoor fireplace? Gas or wood-burning? It's one of the first questions that comes up in almost every outdoor living conversation, and the right answer depends less on what looks best in a photo and more on how you'll actually use the space.
Start with how you gather. A fire pit works well for a group sitting in a circle, conversation, s'mores, the classic backyard hangout. An outdoor fireplace creates more of a focal point and works better if your seating is arranged facing one direction, closer to how a living room feels. If you're not sure, think about how people already tend to sit on your existing patio or deck.
Gas versus wood-burning is really a question of effort versus atmosphere. Gas features light with the push of a button, produce no smoke, and need almost no cleanup, which matters if you'll use it on a random Tuesday evening as much as for a planned gathering. Wood-burning has a smell and a crackle that gas can't fully replicate, but it means storing wood, dealing with ash, and factoring in that not every night is a good night for a fire depending on wind and burn bans.
Size the feature to the space, not the other way around. A fire pit that's too large for its patio makes the whole area feel cramped and pushes seating uncomfortably close to the heat. A good rule of thumb is leaving at least four feet of clearance around the fire feature to seating, and more if you're using an open wood-burning pit.
Budget realistically for the base, not just the feature. The fire pit or fireplace itself is often a smaller cost than the patio, gas line, or hardscaping around it.
