Clay, sand and wet ground
USDA soil maps for the Middlesex area include Georgeville, a well-drained red clay soil weathered from old volcanic rock of the Piedmont; Norfolk, a well-drained sandy Coastal Plain soil; and poorly drained soils such as Rains on flats, Tomotley on old stream terraces and Wehadkee in creek bottoms.
So properties in and around Middlesex may encounter clay that compacts and sheds water, sand that drains fast and dries out, low ground that holds water after a storm, or a mix. The plan for a yard follows whichever it has.
Drainage for wet ground
A spot that never dries out is usually low ground collecting water from somewhere else: the roof, the driveway, or a neighboring slope. We trace where it comes from, regrade so the surface carries water toward an outlet, bury downspout lines, and add French drains or catch basins where grading alone will not do it. Where the ground is wet because it is naturally low and poorly drained, we will say so plainly and plan the landscape around it with plants that tolerate wet feet. Broadleaf is an NDS Professional Drainage Certified Contractor, and our drainage guide explains the options.

Lawn and landscape maintenance
Scheduled grounds care for homes and commercial properties: mowing, trimming, edging and blowing on a set schedule, with shrub pruning, bed care, mulch or pine straw and seasonal color. On the clay, aeration before seeding loosens compacted ground. On the sand, deep, infrequent watering and mulched beds carry plants through the summer. What maintenance covers.
NC State Extension recommends bermuda, zoysia and centipede for both the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain, and rates tall fescue as best adapted to the Piedmont. Here, where the two meet, the right grass depends on the soil and the sun in each part of the yard.
Patios, walls and outdoor living
Paver and stone patios, walkways, fire features, seating walls, retaining walls and landscape lighting. On wet ground, a patio is set slightly above the surrounding grade and pitched so rain runs off and away. On clay, the base is dug to firm ground; on sand, it is compacted in layers with the edges restrained. Taller walls can require an engineered design and a permit, which are not included unless separately contracted. More on construction and enhancements.
Frequently asked questions
What is the soil like in Middlesex?
It varies. USDA maps for the area include Georgeville red clay, sandy Norfolk soil and poorly drained soils on flats and in creek bottoms. A shovel test tells us which a yard has.
Part of my yard never dries out. Can it be drained?
Often it can be improved, especially when the water is coming from the roof or the rest of the yard. If it is naturally low, poorly drained ground, we will tell you so and suggest how to work with it.
Which grass should I plant?
That depends on which ground the lawn sits on. On the red clay, especially with some shade, tall fescue can work. On sunny, sandy ground, bermuda, zoysia or centipede usually hold up better through the summer. We look at the soil and the sun before recommending either.
Are properties outside the town limits part of your service area?
Yes. Properties around Middlesex, in town or out, are part of our service area. If you are unsure about yours, ask.
