Granite, and soils that can be shallow

Rolesville shares its name with the Rolesville batholith, a large body of granite. At Mitchell’s Millpond State Natural Area, the state’s geologists describe it as medium-grained biotite granite about 300 million years old. USDA soil maps for the Rolesville area include Rawlings, Wedowee and Rion soils, all weathered from granite, and in places shallower, sandier soils: the Rolesville series, described from a site in Rolesville as excessively drained and 20 to 40 inches deep over bedrock, and the Wake series, another excessively drained soil over granite.
