What is under a Wendell lawn

USDA soil maps for the Wendell area include Wedowee, Rawlings, Vance, Rion and Saw soils, which formed from weathered granite and gneiss. Wedowee and Rawlings are well drained, with a sandy loam surface over a subsoil of sandy clay loam or clay. Vance is the one worth knowing about: its subsoil is heavier clay that shrinks and swells more and lets water through more slowly.

Soil varies from property to property, and sometimes within one yard, so two parts of the same lawn can need different treatment. The sandier ground dries out and needs its moisture held in. The heavier clay compacts, stays wet after a storm and is where aeration and drainage do the most good.

Most deciduous ornamental grasses provide winter interest, so they are cut back to 4 to 6 inches in late winter, before new growth begins. Mulch or pine straw goes down in an even layer, never piled against a trunk. An overgrown property can often be brought back to order in a single cleanup, with harder pruning timed to the plants afterward.

Retaining walls and slopes

A retaining wall can turn a bank into a usable terrace, and on clay it is as much a drainage job as a stone one. Drainage aggregate behind the wall and a pipe at its base let water out before it builds up pressure.
