The ground around Apex

USDA soil maps for the Apex area include Creedmoor and Green Level soils. Both formed from Triassic mudstone, siltstone and sandstone, and both have a dense clay subsoil. Green Level is somewhat poorly drained and passes water very slowly, and its deeper clay can shrink and swell a great deal. Creedmoor drains a little better but shares the slow, swelling clay. Not every property in and around Apex sits on these soils, and conditions vary from lot to lot.

Where they are present, they tend to show up three ways: water that sits on the lawn long after a storm, pavers that rise and sink with the seasons, and walls that lean when water builds up behind them. None of it rules out a good landscape. It means the drainage and the base are designed for the ground that is actually there.

Drainage

Where the soil takes in water slowly, most of the fix happens on the surface. We regrade so water moves away from the house instead of pooling beside it, bury downspout lines so roof water is carried off instead of dumped at the foundation, and add French drains, catch basins or channel drains where the grade cannot move the water alone. Each is sized for how much water arrives and where it can go without becoming a neighbor’s problem.

Patios, retaining walls and outdoor living

Paver and natural stone patios, walkways and steps sit on an excavated, compacted aggregate base, deep enough that seasonal swelling underneath does not show on top. Retaining walls get drainage aggregate and a pipe at the base, because water trapped behind a wall on clay is what pushes it over. Taller walls can require an engineered design and a permit, which are not included unless separately contracted, and we will say so before pricing if a wall is likely to need them.

Planting in heavy clay

Clay that holds water punishes plants set in a single dug hole, because the hole fills like a bucket. Beds work better amended across their whole width, with plants set slightly above the surrounding grade and mulched in an even layer that is never piled against a stem. Questions about Apex properties

Why do my patio pavers heave in some spots?

Often it is clay underneath swelling and shrinking with the seasons, made worse where water collects under the patio. A deeper compacted base and a way for water to drain out from under the stone are the lasting fix.

My backyard stays soggy for days after a rain. What can be done?

On slow-draining clay, the answer is mostly grading: shaping the surface so water leaves, then catching what remains with drains sized for it. We look at where the water comes from before recommending anything.

Is aeration worth it on an Apex lawn?

On compacted or clay soil, yes, especially before seeding. Aerate compacted or clay soils before seeding, and seed fescue September 1 through October 1 only where dependable irrigation is available.
