Clay, and sometimes fill on top of it

USDA soil maps for the Garner area include Piedmont soils weathered from granite and gneiss, such as Wedowee, Cecil, Rawlings and Rion, most with a clay subsoil under a sandy loam surface. In some developed areas the maps also show Beltline soils, which formed in fill material placed over the original soil during construction.

That matters more than it sounds. Where fill is present, it can be compacted and mixed, with little real topsoil on top, so new lawns struggle and rain runs off instead of soaking in. On a slope, bare clay can wash onto walks and driveways in a storm. Conditions vary by property, and knowing what is under the grass is the first step in fixing any of it.

Erosion and drainage

Clay that washes across a patio or pools against the house is a grading problem first. We reshape the surface so water moves away from buildings at a gentle, controlled grade, bury downspout lines, and add French drains, catch basins or channel drains where the grade cannot carry the water alone. On banks, groundcover, mulched beds or a low wall hold the soil where grass will not.

Landscape maintenance

Scheduled grounds care for homes and commercial properties: mowing, trimming, edging and blowing on a set schedule, with shrub pruning, bed care, mulch or pine straw and seasonal color. On compacted fill and clay, aeration before seeding makes a real difference, and fescue is seeded September 1 through October 1, only where dependable irrigation is available. Garner is one of the towns whose water system merged with Raleigh’s, so Raleigh Water supplies it. What maintenance covers.

Patios, walls and outdoor living

Paver and natural stone patios, walkways, steps, retaining walls, seating walls, fire features and landscape lighting. Fill and clay both need the same care underneath: digging out to firm ground, a compacted aggregate base, and a way for water to escape. Retaining walls get drainage aggregate and a pipe behind them. Taller walls can require an engineered design and a permit, which are not included unless separately contracted. More on construction and enhancements.

For a smaller backyard, one well-built space usually does more than several small ones: a patio sized for how the family actually uses it, with planting around the edges to soften it.

Commercial properties

Scheduled maintenance keeps commercial grounds consistent through the year, and Property Policing adds recurring litter removal for the beds, curbs, entrances and dumpster areas that routine visits leave behind.

Questions about landscaping in Garner

What is fill soil, and does my yard have it?

Fill is soil brought in or moved around during construction. In some developed parts of Garner, USDA maps show it as Beltline soils. A few test holes with a shovel usually tell us what a yard has before any work is planned.

Clay washes onto my driveway every time it rains. What stops it?

Slowing and redirecting the water, then covering the bare soil. Regrading, a drain where the water gathers, and groundcover or mulched beds on the slope usually solve it together.

Do you offer regular maintenance in Garner?

Yes. Scheduled grounds care is available for homes and businesses, with the visits planned around what the property needs through the seasons.

Do you install and repair irrigation?

Yes: new systems, repairs, spring startup and winterization. Each zone is set to water slowly and deeply when the root zone is dry, which suits clay that takes water in slowly far better than short daily cycles.
