Where two kinds of soil meet

Clayton lies in an area where Piedmont and Coastal Plain soils meet. A 1913 USDA soil survey of Johnston County mapped a transitional soil where the Piedmont’s Cecil soils meet the Coastal Plain’s Norfolk soils, with some of its largest areas in the neighborhood of Clayton, and it described tongues of Piedmont ground reaching down the Neuse River among the Coastal Plain material.

Current USDA soil maps for the Clayton area include Wedowee, Cecil and Pacolet, Piedmont soils with clay subsoils, alongside Norfolk, a well-drained Coastal Plain soil with a sandy surface, and poorly drained Wehadkee and Rains soils in low ground along creeks and on flats. Properties in and around Clayton may encounter clay, sand or both, so conditions vary by property.

Choosing and caring for a lawn

Because the ground varies, grass choice deserves a closer look. NC State Extension rates tall fescue as the lawn grass best adapted to the Piedmont and heavier soils, and recommends bermuda, zoysia and centipede for both the Piedmont and the Coastal Plain. On clay with some shade, fescue is often the fit. On sunny, sandier ground, a warm-season grass usually holds up better through summer.

Fescue is seeded September 1 through October 1, after aerating compacted or clay soil, and only where dependable irrigation is available. When a warm-season lawn is started from seed, NC State puts the window between March 1 and July 1.

Landscape maintenance

Drainage and low ground

On the clay, rain soaks in slowly and collects against foundations and in low corners. On the sand, it soaks in fast until it meets something denser. Near the creeks, some ground is wet by nature. We regrade, bury downspout lines, and install French drains, catch basins or channel drains where water has to be carried away. Patios, walls and fire features

Paver and stone patios, walkways, retaining walls, seating walls, fire features and landscape lighting. The base changes with the soil: on clay it is dug to firm ground and built thicker, and on sand it is compacted in layers with the edges held so nothing creeps. A patio with a fire feature and seating wall is planned as one space, so the drainage and the wiring go in before the stone. Is the soil in Clayton clay or sand?

It depends on the property. USDA maps for the area include both Piedmont clay soils and sandier Coastal Plain soils, so a few shovel tests tell us which one a yard has before we plan anything.

Which grass should I plant?

On clay with some shade, tall fescue is often the fit. On sunny, sandy ground, bermuda, zoysia or centipede usually hold up better. We look at the soil and the sun first.

Part of my yard near a creek stays wet. Can it be fixed?

Water coming from the roof or the rest of the yard can usually be redirected. Ground that is wet because it is low, natural creek ground is better managed and planted for than drained.
