A city at the falls of the Tar

Rocky Mount takes its name from the falls of the Tar River, where settlers arrived around 1734 and the rocky terrain earned the name “rocky mound.” When the town was incorporated in 1867, it was divided at the Tar River between Nash and Edgecombe counties, and it still lies in both.

USDA soil maps for the Rocky Mount area include well-drained Norfolk soils, moderately well drained Goldsboro soils, poorly drained Grantham and Rains soils, and Wehadkee soils in bottomland along the river and creeks.
